Basketball Officials Mentor

About being a Mentor

Every great official had someone in their corner early on. As a Basketball Officials Mentor with NCOA North, you'll be that person for newer referees sharing what you've learned, answering the questions that don't make it into the rulebook, and helping mentees grow into confident, capable officials.

This is a volunteer role built around giving back to the association and strengthening the crew for years to come. You set the pace with your mentees, and you'll have the support of NCOA leadership the whole way.

What you'll do

  • Serve as a go-to resource for one or more newer officials in answering questions about rules, mechanics, positioning, and game management.

  • Review game film with your mentees and offer specific, constructive feedback.

  • Share guidance on the parts of officiating that aren't in the manual: pregame routines, communicating with coaches and partners, and managing the tough moments on the court.

  • Check in regularly in zoom meetings and help your mentees set and track development goals.

  • Encourage mentees to work through their first-year and ongoing curriculum, and point them toward the right resources.

Requirements

  • Veteran or retired official.

  • Strong knowledge of NFHS rules and mechanics, and the judgment that comes from real game experience.

  • Patience, approachability, and a genuine interest in helping others improve.

  • Reliable communication and follow-through with mentees.

  • A commitment to representing NCOA North and the officiating community with integrity.
